On Tuesday night, Leota was playing in a second-team game against Oxford University and accidentally collided with another player's elbow. Upon standing up, the charismatic Samoan found that his ear was literally hanging off the side of his head with only an artery keeping it from falling completely off.
Leota was rushed to hospital were he underwent plastic surgery on Wednesday morning. Members of the Wasps' medical team said it was one of the most horrific injuries they've seen on a rugby field.
Doctors successfully reattached the ear and said he should make a full recovery, but will be out of action for a couple of weeks.
Director of Rugby Warren Gatland added, "The loss of Trevor is huge for us as he is such an important part of our game. However, this season we seem to be very unlucky with injuries and every time we get a player back, we lose another one. It was a horrible injury to see but he should be okay."
Leota is the second Wasps hooker to be sidelined. Ben Gotting is still out with an ankle injury, which means Phil Greening and Jonny Barrett will be involved against Biarritz this Sunday.
