"I'm very proud of my team. Some days, like the game against Harlequins, everything seems to go for you, but today was different," said the Munster skipper.
"We gave them a leg up at the start with a sluggish opening. You can't do that against good sides like Clermont.
"We had out opportunities in the second half but we didn't really take them. We got a good try from Ronan's kick through, but failure to convert when we were in the green zone really killed us.
"We were doing a lot of good things when we got our try, but we turned over too many balls. We have been doing that all season - we needed to stay in their 22 and be more beligerent."
