The key moment came when the Stade Francais Paris full back opted to shoot for goal to try to level the scores with seven minutes left to play at Stade Aime Giral. He was almost 60 metres away from the posts, but both he and Hook knew what was possible.
"We are bitterly disappointed because we wanted to give our fans something to finish the season on a high with, but it wasn't good enough," admitted Hook.
"In the second half we were kicking to them and they were running the ball back at us. They defended well and Jerome kicked very well.
"I wasn't surprised at all when he kicked that monster penalty. I'd seen him do that for us last season and the wind was quite strongly in his favour."
Hook ended with a try and four penalties to give the British & Irish Lions selectors another nudge that he is worth taking in the squad bound for Hong Kong and Japan.
