Montpellier raced into an early lead in their first Heineken Cup quarter-final but they were eventually well beaten by a Clermont side at the peak of their powers.
Tulou feels the visitors contributed to their own downfall with a number of basic errors but he admits that it would have taken something extra special to reach the final four of Europe's premier club competition.
"We're disappointed, that's how it is. We played well, but made too many mistakes. What's done is done," said Tulou.
"Clermont are a great team, but we gave the game away, and against such strong opponents you just can't do that.
"We missed tackles, and that's forbidden at this level.
"We should have stayed on top after a good start but we didn't. I'm having a hard time putting it in words.
"If you want to win against Clermont, you have to get close to a perfect game."
