Season 2002-03

Leicester's dreams of making it a hat-trick of wins came to halt in the quarter-finals at Welford Road when Munster gained ample revenge for their final defeat the previous season by winning 20-7. It was the second major triumph for the Irish province in the 2002/03 tournament as they had beaten Gloucester 33-6 in their final pool game at Thomond Park. The four tries and 27-point winning margin were the exact targets they had to meet in that game to reach the quarter-finals. No wonder it became known as the 'Miracle Match'.

But this was the season the French clubs hit back - and the Amlin Challenge Cup winners were guaranteed a ticket into the Heineken Cup. Starved of success since Brive's triumph in 1997, Toulouse and Perpignan set-up the first final between two clubs from the same country with Dublin's Lansdowne Road the host venue.

TOULOUSE made it two titles as they held off a spirited second half revival from their Catalan rivals after racing into a 19-point lead at the break. In the end, they triumphed 22-17 to give coach Guy Noves his second European title.
