Season 1996-97

The English and the Scots entered this time as the ambitious organisers arranged two competitions. There were 20 clubs in the elite Heineken Cup, making up four fiercely contested pools of five, and a further 24 in a second tier tournament. Only Leicester and Brive reached the knockout stage with 100 per cent records and ultimately made it all the way to the final, while the holders, Toulouse, and the inaugural runners-up, Cardiff, fell at the semi-final stage.

After 46 matches, BRIVE enjoyed the biggest day in their history as they turned in a sublime performance to destroy Dean Richards' Leicester 28-9 in front of an enthralled Cardiff Arms Park crowd of 41,664, and a television audience of millions worldwide.

More than 20,000 fans crammed into Brive's main square to watch Alain Penaud and his team bring home the Heineken Cup before all the players went on for an audience with the French President, and old Brive player, Jacques Chirac in Paris.
