"We are in control of our pool, we have worked very hard to get there and scored a lot of tries in the Heineken Cup," said Smith, on the back of another impressive home performance beating Sale last weekend.
"We have played some really good rugby and we can sniff being in the Heineken Cup play-offs for the first time. We are two wins away and the first of those matches is against Newport Gwent Dragons and it is a must-win game.
"A home quarter-final is the plan, if you get a home quarter-final in any competition then you have a real shot of the semi-finals, but there are a lot of good teams in Europe and for us to be in the top eight would be absolutely outstanding - we have a lot of work to do, two big games.
"We cannot underestimate the Dragons, teams that do that can come unstuck, but we really play some good footie at home, it is a hard place to beat us, it has become a bit of a fortress with five wins in a row at home - we need to make that six.
"Let's be honest about this, we are not a fashionable club - our name is London Irish and we play in England so we do not get a lot of love apart from our supporters.
"On paper we do not have a great deal of squad depth and plenty of people have been happy to write us off as relegation battlers, but the key thing is we play for each other - our set piece is good and we have some really classy backs.
"If we keep our heads down, do all the fundamentals, take our chances when they come, pay attention to detail - then the big picture in the Heineken Cup should look after itself."
