L’équipe de Bristol a chamboulé l’ordre des choses dans la Poule 3 suite à sa plus grande victoire de H Cup en battant les champions français du Stade Français Paris 17 à 0.

Il s’agit de la quatrième défaite consécutive des Parisiens sur le sol anglais et la défense agressive de Bristol a empêché les visiteurs de marquer pour la première fois dans leur 62e match de Heineken Cup.

Bristol a tout d’abord gagné le tir à pile ou face et a choisi de jouer face au vent et à la pluie cinglante. Les Anglais étaient ravis d’arriver à la mi-temps en affichant 6 à 0. Les pénalités réussies par leur demi d’ouverture Dave Hill à la 17e et 29e minute leur ont permis de prendre une avance bien méritée et de les maintenir à distance de leurs dangereux visiteurs. Avec un vent fort dans leur dos en deuxième période, les joueurs de Bristol ont pu maintenir la pression et forcer les Parisiens à commettre une série d’erreurs.

La mêlée de Bristol avait de quoi embarrasser le pack français et le travail de Ron Winters et de Sean Hohneck en touche ont permis d’alimenter régulièrement leurs joueurs en ballons. Hohneck a d’ailleurs été élu Homme du Match.

Une troisième pénalité réussie par Hill à la 60e minute a prolongé leur avance de 9 points et l’essai assassin fut l’œuvre du centre Neil Brew quatre minutes avant la fin.

Alors que les Français, dont huit internationaux principaux manquaient à l’appel, tentaient le tout pour le tout à partir du milieu de terrain, une passe de Brian Liebenberg a été interceptée par Brew, toujours alerte.

Le centre de Bristol s’est élancé et a passé à son coéquipier milieu de terrain Rob Higgitt avant de plonger dans le coin droit pour marquer le premier essai du match. Hill n’a pas pu ajouté les points de la transformation mais il est parvenu à réussir une quatrième pénalité à la toute fin du match pour enregistrer ce que son entraîneur Richard Hill décrit comme la plus grande victoire du club de ces cinq dernières années.
