Heineken Cup quarter-final form guide

The clash between Top 14 rivals ASM Clermont Auvergne and Montpellier will be the eighth all-French quarter-final, but the first time the two teams have met in the Heineken Cup. It will be Clermont's fifth quarter-final, but their first at home at fortress Stade Marcel Michelin.

The second seeded side went through Pool 5 unbeaten to extend their winning run at home in the Heineken Cup to 14 games. Only four teams in 30 Pool matches have won at Stade Marcel Michelin, the last being Sale Sharks in 2008/09.

Montpellier have reached the last eight for the first time in only their second season in the Heineken Cup - they won the European Shield in 2004 - and have in their head coach, Fabien Galthie, a man who has reached a Heineken Cup final both as a player (Colomiers 1999) and as a coach (Stade Francais Paris 2005).

There are links to the Heineken Cup final in other coaching teams as well. Munster's forwards coach Anthony Foley played in his side's defeats in 2000 and 2002 and was captain in 2006 when Munster finally won the title.

Toulon forwards coach Olivier Azam was an Amlin Challenge Cup winner with Montferrand in 1999 and Gloucester in 2006, while Leicester Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill was a losing finalist in the Heineken Cup in 1997 and a winner as an unused replacement in 2001 and 2002.

The clash between Saracens and Ulster will see the two men who jointly lifted the Heineken Cup in the first final staged in Dublin in 1999, respective directors of rugby Mark McCall and David Humphreys, reunited. McCall was the captain of Ulster for that season, but suffered an injury that forced him to miss the entire European campaign.

Humprheys stepped into the breach, but ensured McCall went up with him to pick up the trophy after Ulster had become the first Irish province to be crowned champions of Europe with victory over Colomiers.

Saracens forwards coach Paul Gustard also knows all about what it takes to reach a Heineken Cup final. He was an unused replacement in Paris in 2001 when Leicester Tigers won the first of their back-to-back titles.
