Jonny Wilkinson will make a decision on his playing future in February.
The 33-year-old World Cup winner is out of contract with Toulon at the end of the season and is considering hanging up his boots.
"I'm capable of carrying on, but it's a delicate balance," said Wilkinson.
"The question isn't what I would like to do, but what is best for my team. After I've asked myself that question, then I'll think about myself."
Wilkinson has been in fine form for Toulon, who sit top of Pool Six and remain unbeaten in Europe.
Toulon already have one foot in the knockout stages of the Heineken Cup ahead of their January clashes with Montpellier and Cardiff Blues.
The big-spending French club also lead the Top 14 and Wilkinson reckons his side can complete a memorable double.
"Can we do the double? I'd say yes. I'm never satisfied, but I'm happy with how we've played. We're heading in the right direction. The most important thing is the rapport between the players, and that's where we're lucky."
