Gloucester have been given a massive boost ahead of their key Pool 1 clash with Premiership rivals London Irish at Kingsholm on Saturday with rising star Jonny May signing a new two-year contract.
May has scored seven tries in 10 European appearances for the 2006 tournament champions - including a brace against Toulouse in January's 34-24 home Heineken Cup Pool 6 triumph.
"I see Jonny very much as a wing and a potential international winger, who can occasionally play full-back," said Gloucester's Director of Rugby Nigel Davies. "I've been open and honest with him, that's where I see him.
"We can use him as a full-back at times and it will help his all-round game as a winger to do that.
"But I certainly don't see him fitting into that slot for the long-term.
"One of the main focuses which is running in the background to our challenge of progressing on the field is to make sure we sign up a core group of players to take Gloucester forward in the next two to three years.
"And I see Jonny as central to that. He's one of the young crop of very exciting players that we have at Gloucester, and to secure his services for the next couple of years is very important to us, to achieve that and have that type of quality in our squad.
"And we were under intense pressure from a lot of clubs for Jonny's services, and ultimately he's decided to stay part of Gloucester, so it's credit to him and credit to the club."
