Mark Anscombe has warned unbeaten Ulster that they must vastly improve ahead of Friday night's Heineken Cup clash with Northampton Saints.
The Irish province are the only top flight European side still unbeaten in all competitions but they have produced a string of under par performances.
They have twice got out of jail with late winners in Italy and edged past the Scarlets on Sunday thanks to an Andrew Trimble interception try.
Anscombe was bitterly disappointed with yet another lacklustre performance and insists his side must pick up their form or face defeat at Franklin's Gardens.
"It didn't feel like a win against the Scarlets and was pretty disappointing," said Anscombe.
"It was a poor game of rugby from both teams. We did enough to set up a platform to take the game. But we didn't look after the ball, we gave away too many silly penalties, played dumb rugby and were inaccurate.
"They're wins but I'm not taking a lot of comfort from the way we're playing. We have better players than our performances are indicating.
"Some guys had an opportunity to put their hands up for selection and they didn't take it and will be missing out next week.
"We know we have a lot to do between now and next Friday or we will get our backsides kicked in Northampton.
"We have only five days to turn it around and have to get back on our feet. We don't have a lot of time so it will be up to individuals to execute better than against the Scarlets."
The back-to-back clashes with Northampton are likely to determine the outcome of Pool Four.
Ulster are currently top, following their victories over Glasgow Warriors and Castres Olympique, while the Saints are second and trailing by just three points.
And Anscombe reckons the English club, who cruised past Sale Sharks last Friday, will be full of confidence ahead of the clash at their home fortress.
"I've never been to Franklin's Gardens but I understand it's a difficult place to go," added Anscombe.
"They had a very impressive win on Friday, their pack is strong and they play to their strengths. They will be pretty confident after seeing our game on TV."
