Roger Wilson is hoping to be fully fit and free from pain by the time Ulster face Northampton Saints in the Heineken Cup next month.
Wilson is finally all set to start his second spell at last season's beaten Heineken Cup finalists two months later than he would have liked.
The Ireland No8 returned to his hometown club from the Saints during the summer but has yet to feature because of a hamstring injury.
But after a frustrating wait to officially mark his homecoming, Wilson will start for the Belfast-based province in Friday night's PRO12 clash with Edinburgh.
And while he admits he's not yet 100 per cent fit, all that should change by the time Ulster travel to Franklin's Gardens for a mouth-watering Pool 4 encounter on December 7.
"It was not the way I wanted to be returning to Ulster, and things are not quite there yet, but the hamstring is as good as it can be at the moment," Wilson told the Belfast Telegraph.
"There will still be a big of tightness and there will be a bit more needed during the warm up.
"The nature of the injury will mean that it will take about another month maybe before I would not feel it any more.
"I may not have 100 per cent acceleration or agility just yet, but it is good enough to play rugby with.
"I was angling to get back a bit earlier but the physios and the medical team wanted me to be patient. Of course, they were right because if I was to injure the hamstring for a second time, the wait could be even longer."
Ulster have remained unbeaten during Wilson's absence, winning both Heineken Cup fixtures and all six domestic ties so far this term.
And while seeing his team carrying on the success they enjoyed last season is obviously pleasing, Wilson knows it leaves with him a tough task to re-establish himself before the first continental clash with his old club in just over four weeks' time.
"It is a good time to be coming back," added Wilson, who started the 2011 Heineken Cup Final for Northampton against Leinster in Cardiff.
"The boys have been playing well, especially those in the back row and Nick Williams (Wilson's main competitor for the No8 shirt) has had a fantastic start to the season since joining.
"Like those before me, it is important I take the opportunity when it comes. I am looking forward to being at Ravenhill on Friday night and it will be a special occasion for me."
