Biarritz Olympique have been dealt a big blow ahead of the Amlin Challenge Cup Final with the news that Benoit Baby is out for the rest of the season.
Biarritz take on Toulon at the Twickenham Stoop a week on Friday as they look for a first European trophy having been narrowly beaten in both the 2006 and 2010 Heineken Cup finals.
But while the Basque giants will travel to London in high spirits have finally secured their Top 14 Status with a week to spare, coaches Serge Milhas and John Isaac will be forced to reshuffle their midfield after star centre Baby broke his hand last weekend.
Baby suffered the setback just 22 minutes into the domestic defeat to Montpellier - a game in which Biarritz claimed the losing bonus point that saw them guarantee their Top 14 place for next season.
The 28-year-old will miss this weekend's final league game with Stade Francais and the Amlin Challenge Cup Final as he faces a lengthy lay-off.
Baby, who joined Biarritz last summer after four years with ASM Clermont Auvergne, has been a key figure in this season's European campaign, featuring in all bar one of his side's Heineken Cup and Amlin Challenge Cup ties.
The nine-times capped French international only missed the Heineken Cup fixture at home to Benetton Treviso back in December and was involved in both of his team's Amlin knockout stage wins against London Wasps and Brive.
Baby has also been a regular fixture in Biarritz' Top 14 matchday squads, featuring in 18 of their 25 league games to date and starting on 11 occasions.
His absence could lead to a chance for 21-year-old Jean-Pascal Barraque in the season's showpiece after the fly-half cum centre impressed when he replaced Baby at Montpellier.
Dane Haylett-Petty and Ilikena Bolakoro provide other options for Biarritz, while the return of Argentine star Marcello Bosch means he may be the most likely to partner veteran Damien Traille in the centres.
