"With the match just six days before the Ulster semi-final it was always going to be one of those days," said Edinburgh head coach Michael Bradley.
"Now everyone is looking forward to the semi-final and while Ulster will be favourites, that is fine by us.
"We are well used to being the underdogs and we have proved that on our day we are a very dangerous side.
"Naturally I was not happy with the result but the guys tried very hard and stuck at it, though some of the skill levels and fluency let us down.
"They showed a lot of character under a lot of pressure and we did get something out of it."
The selection decision for Edinburgh's final away trip in the Pro12 also enabled Bradley to declare ahead of the biggest match in the club's history "we have a fully fit squad, no worries there".
With Edinburgh's stars out of harms way the match at Cardiff City Stadium was far from a dress rehearsal for the Aviva showdown, replacement outside-half Harry Leonard getting their only try near the end long after the Blues had banked the try bonus point with Alex Cuthbert weighing in with a quick-fire try hat-trick.
