Brive back row Alexandre Bias admits he and his team-mates are both surprised and delighted to have reached the semi-finals of the Amlin Challenge Cup.
Bias produced a stand-out display in the 15-11 victory over the Scarlets on Sunday as Brive booked a place in the final four for the third time.
The 1997 Heineken Cup winners are now targeting a first Amlin Challenge Cup Final having come through a tie many outsiders were predicting the Welsh outfit would win.
And even though Brive won all six of their pool games, including an impressive triumph at Sale Sharks in the final round, Bias insists the club never expected to be in with a shout of European glory.
"I am just so happy, with the result. The Scarlets are a Heineken Cup team with a dangerous style of play," said Bias.
"Reaching the Amlin Challenge Cup semi-finals in a difficult season like this one is just awesome for the club.
"Things have been tough in the Top 14 and, in truth, winning the Amlin wasn't our biggest goal at the beginning of the season. But now we've made it through we won't complain!
"We must stay calm, though. Our focus is already on the Top 14 game against Racing Metro next week. We have to concentrate on playing well in that game and the one after and then our bonus game against Biarritz in the semi-final will come.
"We don't get to play in a semi-final every day, so there will be one only goal as far as we are concerned: victory."
Brive may have been written off by sections of the media and even some of their own supporters before Sunday's quarter-final but Bias insists the belief within the squad pulled them through at the Stadium Amedee-Domenech.
The Scarlets started brightly in central France but Brive refused to budge defensively and Bias believes that attitude laid an important early marker - one that ultimately paved the way to a semi-final spot.
"We realised we could go and win the game right at the very start of the match," added Bias.
"Our first tackles showed us that. We started aggressively and continued the same way.
"We defended well, our scrum was particularly powerful and we kept the scoreboard ticking over. The more the game went on, we knew that qualification wasn't far away.
"We respected our game plan but we played without pressure. We wanted to play an offensive style of rugby…and the rhythm of this competition allows more freedom than the Top 14. Maybe during the first half we were exposed a little too much but the game turned out well for us in the end."
