Not surprisingly, there were no excuses offered by Harlequins Director of Rugby, Conor O'Shea, following his side's crushing 37-8 Amlin Challenge Cup quarter-final defeat by Toulon at Stade Mayol.
Even if this was a truly impressive performance by the 2010 tournament runners-up who now meet Stade Francais in the last four, Quins looked a shade weary in the final quarter of a game and they clearly missed the guiding influence of injury victims Nick Evans and England and club captain, Chris Robshaw.
"Look, this isn't an easy place to play. Toulon don't lose at Mayol very often and they were very physical, so you've got to give them credit. They're in the semi-final and they've decided to keep Bakkies Botha and Simon Shaw in reserve, and that tells you something about their strength in depth," said O'Shea whose side won the Amlin Challenge Cup in such dramatic fashion in Cardiff last season.
"I don't necessarily agree that we were tired," he continued, "and it wasn't a case of us missing Nick and Chris. You have to back the team you put on the pitch and there were some good lessons learned by our younger players.
"Of course we're disappointed to lose the trophy, but we know we came up against a really good side, and sometimes you simply have to admit that. We did concede penalties, but that comes from pressure and when you're away from home, the pressure builds and naturally, Jonny Wilkinson just doesn't miss."
Quins trailed 22-3 at the break with Wilkinson landing six kicks from six for a personal total of 17 points before being replaced because of injury, and there was no way back during the second half as the winners added tries from Benjamin Lapeyre and Steffon Armitage.
