As Ulster Rugby, Cardiff Blues, Toulouse and ASM Clermont Auvergne prepare for their away trips in this weekend's Heineken Cup quarter-finals they won't be heartened by the statistics relating to victories on the road at this stage of Europe's greatest club rugby competition.
The 60 Heineken Cup quarter-finals to date have ended with the home team winning 46 times and the away team going through to the semi-finals on 14 occasions - an average of less than one away win per season. It means almost 77% of the quarter-finals have gone with home advantage with four-times champions Toulouse accounting for seven of those home wins, Munster Rugby six and Leicester Tigers five.
Munster, as the No 1 seeds, have home advantage over Irish rivals Ulster on Sunday, 8 April at Thomond Park, while Toulouse have to travel to Murrayfield to face Edinburgh Rugby in their first home quarter-final in front of a 30,000+ crowd on Saturday, 7 April.
And Munster are the only team to have won three away quarter-finals, at Stade Jean-Bouin against Stade Francais Paris (2002), at Welford Road against Leicester Tigers (2003) and at Gloucester Rugby in 2008. Toulouse have triumphed twice on the road, at Dax in 1997 and in Spain at Estadio Anoeta against Biarritz Olympique last season, and defending champions Leinster Rugby at Toulouse in 2006 and Harlequins in 2009.
Seven other clubs have managed it once each with Brive first to make their mark with a 25-18 win at London Wasps back in 1998. Both Cardiff Blues, who travel to face reigning champions Leinster Rugby at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, and ASM Clermont Auvergne, who head to Watford the next day to meet English champions Saracens, have each lost three quarter-finals away from home.
