The Romanian National Team got their FIRA-AER European Nations Cup campaign off to a winning start with the help of a strong contingent from Amlin Challenge Cup participants Bucharest Wolves.
Romania defeated rivals Portugal, 15 points to 7, in a match that will help their early qualifications hopes for the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England
Amlin Challenge Cup fans may recognise many of the squad that recorded the win with no less than 15 players from the match 22 coming through to the national ranks having played in European Club rugby over past two seasons for Bucharest Wolves (formerly Bucharest Oaks).
Like many recent games, including the Six Nations France v Ireland, the anticipated Nations Cup opener was also at risk of posponment due to adverse weather conditions and only went ahead after hundreds of volunteers worked to ensure the Stadionul National Arcul de Triumf venue was playable. The stadium was also home to the Bucharest Wolves in the pool stages of the 2011/12 Amlin Challenge Cup.
For the past thirteen seasons Romania have provided one of the invited developmental sides to the ERC organised Amlin Challenge Cup tournament which has seen Bucharest make significant progress from meeting tops sides from England, France and Italy on a regular basis.
