Rob Baxter has paid tribute to his Exeter Chiefs side as they made history by reaching the Amlin Challenge Cup knockout stages for the first time thanks to an emphatic win over Perpignan.
The victory marks an amazing turn around for the Devon outfit who were playing in the English Championship two years ago.
"We've talked a lot about ambition and the boys played like an ambitious group," said Baxter.
"It's been a long time coming and people have put in a lot of hard work here. Four or five years if someone had said we would be in a winner takes all match with Perpignan I would have thought they were mad!
"The boys have achieved something here today that no other player has done before at this club. It's now up to them to push on in the competition."
The Chiefs had appeared on course for a heavy loss and on the brink of crashing out of Europe as the visitors surged into a 14-0 lead inside ten minutes thanks to tries from Charles Geli and Joffrey Michel.
But the English club showed great character and turned the game on its head thanks to the boot of Ignacio Mieres and Hayden Thomas.
Brett Sturgess raced clear for a crucial try in a tense second-half before James Phillips finished the job.
"We were probably a bit over eager to play early on and didn't take early opportunities to get territory," added Baxter.
"We wanted to get in the game and play but got undone at the breakdown and they had a couple of tries.
"It's not something we try to do but we are used to coming back after poor starts. You have to react positively in situations like that and we did.
"When you are at home against a French team you know if you build a score and keep pressuring them things will start going your way
"All of a sudden the first half was all about us. We gained momentum, forced pressure and got penalties to get back in the game.
"In the second-half we went after the game and were pretty pleased with the way things went."
The Chiefs will have to wait until the outcome of London Wasps Pool Three clash with Bordeaux Begles to find out if they have done enough to earn a home draw.
Baxter admits he would prefer a home clash but is just grateful to be playing knockout European rugby.
"We've done our bit and are waiting on the Wasps result. If they get the result we will have to travel away.
"It would be fantastic to play here in Exeter at the quarter-finals. It would be a big occasion for the club but if not it's not the end of the world because we are still playing in Europe.
"It's brilliant for the club and as a squad we have to take a great sense of excitement and achievement from what we have done today.
"We are trying to move the club to places it has never been before and things are looking very positive."
