Now Schmidt and his players can sit back and relax as the final few games are concluded over the weekend to complete the eight quarter-final teams.
"Being favourites is something we have had to live with this year. Are we comfortable with that, probably not," admitted Schmidt, who guided Leinster to their second Heineken Cup crown and the final of the Magners League in his first season in charge.
"It is hard to think back to last year. We had just won with a bonus point in Paris at this stage last year against a Racing team that wasn't their top line-up. To get through this season against a top Montpellier side that is flying in the Top 14 is great, especially with a few players on the injury list.
"It is hard to know who we will get now, but we've got the home draw. Let's see what the rest of the weekend brings.
"There were a number of bits of our game that came together well and we defended very well during a tough period in the first half."
The win at the RDS saw home No 8 Jamie Heaslip and replacement scrum half Eoin Reddan play their 50th Heineken Cup games and receive their caps as members of the ERC Elite Club. Heaslip became the 14th and Reddan, who has won the Heineken Cup with both Leinster and London Wasps, the 15th players from the Dublin-based club to reach the landmark
