Scarlets director of rugby Nigel Davies believes his side need to create a powerful platform from which they can launch their free running game plan.
The Welsh region impressed last season with an open style of running rugby in the Heineken Cup but didn't manage to qualify for the knock-out stages. Leicester Tigers and Perpignan both progressed from Pool 5 that time around and Davies is determined by creating a platform upfront they can go one better this season and reach the quarter-finals.
"Last season we had the capability to compete with all the sides we played but an area we have been looking at for this season is creating a platform to allow us to play," said Davies.
"Our set-piece needs to function and we need to win the contact area and that is where our focus has been. And with that we feel we can play the kind of rugby we know we can that we can beat anybody in the competition."
The Scarlets face the Ospreys in a Welsh derby clash this weekend before hosting Castres Olympique in their opening Heineken Cup tie at the Parc y Scarlets on Saturday November 13.
And momentum is vital going into that opening match according to Davies.
"We have built some good momentum over the last four matches which is good going into a really tough period," he said.
"And with the local derby this weekend its important we continue that ahead of our European campaign."
