Heineken Cup finalist Stephen Myler believes Northampton Saints' summer signings will help them build on this season and reckons that competition for places will be fierce come the first round of action.
The English Premiership side have added to their squad well in the off season, with the likes of Ryan Lamb, Tom May and Noah Cato all arriving at Franklin's Gardens.
And with the World Cup effecting the first two months of the season, Myler believes the new additions are vital to the Saints' strength in depth.
"We've got a few new lads in this year, which will hopefully add to the strength of our squad, which is important," said Myler told the Northampton Evening Chronicle.
"They've fitted in well so far. The main thing is they are knuckling down, working hard and giving everything, which the conditioning team and the coaches expect from us. It seems to be going well so far.
""Certainly the lads who are coming in, they know there's a competitive squad here and they're going to have to work hard to get in. Everyone's aware of that and everyone's working hard."
Last season Myler battled it out with Shane Geraghty for the number ten jersey, but with Geraghty now playing his club rugby in France, Myler will be up against former Gloucester and London Irish fly-half Lamb for the playmaker spot this season.
"He's working hard as we're all doing," he added.
"He's a chirpy little character as everybody knows and he's thoroughly enjoying pre-season as the rest of the lads that have come in are doing."
