Northampton Saints will be without England flanker Tom Wood for their Heineken Cup final clash against Leinster this weekend after he failed to recover from a hairline leg fracture.
Wood, who also missed the semi-final victory over Perpignan, has been sleeping in an oxygen tent in the hope of speeding up his recovery, but after only returning to training yesterday Jim Mallinder has ruled him out of the Cardiff final.
"It's just a week to soon," said the Saints director of rugby.
"He returned to training yesterday and it was a close call.
"But he is not 100% fit and if we were a desperate team we could have gone with him and taken a chance but we have a good squad so we are not in that position.
"It's a really big blow but if you get to this stage of the season and only have worries about one of your players, that is a good position to be in."
The 24-year-old made his international debut for England at the Millennium Stadium earlier this year but will miss out on the chance returning and helping the Saints set the record as the only team to make it nine straight wins and complete their Heineken Cup season unbeaten.
