Perry Freshwater praised Perpignan's character after they stuck to their guns to earn what could be a crucial draw against Leicester Tigers at fortress Welford Road.
A last-gasp penalty from the impressive Nicholas Laharrague ensured the points were shared in an enthralling Pool 3 encounter in freezing conditions in the East Midlands.
Perpignan haven't qualified for the knockout stages since reaching the Heineken Cup Final back in 2003 but their efforts on Saturday afternoon mean a quarter-final place is now well within their grasp.
"Not many teams come here and get any kind of result," said Freshwater, who was a Heineken Cup winner with Leicester eight-and-a-half years ago.
"They know this crowd very well. They know how to win games and they know how to grind games out.
"We know we've got good character and we know we've got a lot of good spirit in the squad, but traditionally we're not great away from home and in the Heineken Cup we're not great. But today it was fantastic just to hang on because Leicester really know how to close out games.
"I thought they were very good at the contact area and I thought they were very good at the setpiece but we managed to hang on and get a draw.
"Right until the last second I thought we'd go and give away penalties but we managed to hold on to it and we stuck it out. That's always been a problem for us in the Heineken Cup - we give away too many penalties because of the interpretation. We gave away a lot of penalties but we managed to hang in there.
"It feels like a win. The boys are very happy in the changing room."
Perpignan remain in third place in Pool 5 but they now trail leaders the Scarlets by three points and are just a point behind the Tigers.
And with a trip to Treviso in the next round of action followed by a home fixture against the Welsh region still to come, two impressive victories could well win the group for Freshwater and co.
But while today's result is clearly a massive boost for the Catalans, the giant England prop insists no one will be getting too carried away.
"This group is going down to the last couple of games," added Freshwater.
"We haven't looked to the other games - we're just enjoying this at the moment.
"Just because the Scarlets is a home game, it doesn't mean we're going to win it. They did a real job on us down there. Our defence was terrible there so we've got to sort a few things out.
"We're 10th in the Top 14 so we can't get ahead of ourselves. We've got to keep working and keep our feet on the ground."
