Toulon fly-half Jonny Wilkinson has been ruled out of England's autumn internationals with a shoulder injury.
The 31-year-old was injured playing for his side against Stade Francais at the weekend and will require four weeks on the sideline.
England kick-off their international campaign against Tri-Nations champions New Zealand on November 6 and have called up Sale Sharks points-machine Charlie Hodgson to replace Wilkinson in the Elite Player Squad.
Wilkinson has been unable to train with the England team this week and even though it was announced earlier in the week that the injury did not require surgery, further assessment has concluded he will need a month of rehabilitation before returning to the field.
"As I said on Wednesday Jonny was being assessed day-by-day and we would have a better idea of where he was in terms of the injury by the end of this week", said England team manager Martin Johnson.
"It's clear that Jonny will need a period of rehab of around four weeks and this will be carried out in conjunction with Toulon."
Wilkinson guided Toulon to their debut Heineken Cup victory over the Ospreys on the first weekend of European action in
October, but the French side were comprehensively beaten by double European champions Munster the following weekend.
Toulon face London Irish in back-to-back fixtures in December.
