Ospreys full-back Lee Byrne has been ruled out until at least the last weekend of November after fracturing his hand in his side's defeat away to Glasgow Warriors at the weekend.
The British & Irish Lions tourist will miss the first three of Wales' autumn internationals against Australia, South Africa and Fiji and is a major doubt for the final Test of the series against New Zealand on November 27.
Byrne faces further medical examinations this week to determine the length of the lay-off and the 30-year-old faces a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of Rounds 3 and 4 of the Heineken Cup in December.
The Ospreys travel to Thomond Park on December 12 to line up against double European Champions Munster in the first crucial back-to-back games.
"Lee will be given a specialist opinion this afternoon on whether his injury is treatable with a cast," said Wales physio Mark Davies.
"If that is the case rather than surgery he will have an outside chance of being back for the All Blacks game."
