Heineken Cup new-boys Aironi have lost Roberto Quartaroli for the rest of the season after the centre had surgery to repair the torn ACL in his right knee.
Quartaroli was forced from the field in the final minutes of only his second game for the Italian outfit against Ulster, the same game where his centre partner South African Dylan Des Fountain was also ruled out for the season with the same injury.
The 22-year-old made his international debut against Wales in the 2009 Six Nations and signed for Aironi from Italian Super 10 outfit Rugby Parma this summer.
He will now begin his rehabilitation programme and it is hoped he will be fit in time for the start of pre-season training next summer.
Former Saracens centre Rodd Penney, who signed to ease Aironi's midfield woes, will make his debut for the Italian side in the Magners League against Edinburgh tomorrow.
The Viadana-based side make their European debut at Ravenhill against Ulster on Friday, October 8 and will be looking for revenge against Irish side who beat them 22-15 at the Stadio Zaffanella in the Magners League three weeks ago.
The Italians' host former European Champions Bath a week later before back-to-back games against last season's beaten finalists Biarritz Olympique in December.
