Toulon may have shrugged off their "Galacticos" tag but director rugby Bernard Laporte believes they now have the strength to become only the second French club to win a league and Heineken Cup double.
Toulon could not have come closer to a double last season, losing in the final of both the French Championship and Amlin Challenge Cup.
But with the likes of Jonny Wilkinson, Matt Giteau and Bakkies Botha providing depth and experience, Laporte believes they can emulate Toulouse's double success in 1997.
Laporte said: "Sure we are very proud of the beginning of the season. We are competitive in Top 14 and have the players to do well in the Heineken Cup.
"If we do not have many injuries then we have team to compete with the best European teams. Last year we did not have the team to compete in Heineken Cup but this year we are ready for both competitions."
Montpellier start only their second season in the Heineken Cup and hope to have learned lessons from two draws and two narrow losses in the pool stage.
The arrivals of Bath pair Shontayne Hape and Matthew Carraro will add European know-how.
