Zurich Premiership side Saracens survived a second-half comeback from Brive to earn a 13-point victory in their European Challenge Cup quarter-final first-leg match at Vicarage Road.
Paul Bailey replaced injured Saracens winger Richard Haughton in the 20th minute and his try 10 minutes later proved to be the only five-pointer of the match.
The home side held a 13-0 lead at the break, with fly-half Nicky Little ending the match with a crucial 14 points in front of more than 4,000 fans.
Brive stayed in touch with two Julien Laharrague penalty goals, but weren't helped by a 26th-minute yellow card to lock John Welborn for punching.
