It will be the fourth time that Twickenham Stadium has hosted the world's biggest club rugby game - and on each previous occasion an English club has carried off the trophy.
The trend was started by one of this season's finalists, Northampton Saints, when they beat Munster 9-8 in 2000. The Saints side was coached by current RFU chief executive, John Steele.
The Heineken Cup final returned to Twickenham in 2004 and 2007 and on both occasions London Wasps triumphed. They took the title from Toulouse in 2004, winning 27-20, and three years later their captain, Lawrence Dallaglio, was able to lift the Heineken Cup again as Wasps beat Leicester Tigers 25-9.
The 68,441 fans who watched the 2000 final set a tournament record, and there were 73,057 packed in for the 2004 game. The only all-English club Heineken Cup final to date in 2007 attracted a then tournament and world club rugby record gate of 81,076.
"It is going to be a hard act to follow for the English clubs next season, but I'm sure having the Heineken Cup final back at Twickenham Stadium will also provide them with a major incentive," said ERC chief executive Derek McGrath..
"As well as winning the first Twickenham final in 2000, Northampton Saints are back on the biggest of stages for Saturday's Heineken Cup final when they meet Leinster at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.
"But from next week our focus will switch to Twickenham Stadium and the staging of another major rugby event when the Heineken Cup final returns to that magnificent venue in 2012."
"In 16 short years the Heineken Cup has become a vivid and exhilarating part of the rugby landscape. Year on year, it is even more competitive, more high profile and more exciting," said RFU chief executive, John Steele.
"The opportunity to host the 2012 final at Twickenham, the largest rugby stadium in the world, is a privilege and we look forward to an 82,000 full house to celebrate the best of European club rugby."
