Wattisham Warriors RFC claimed victory at the fifth Heineken 10s festival held at Cambridge RFC on Saturday 27th September as they edged to victory over North Walsham in a closely closely fought Cup final.
The Warriors battled to an exhausting 12 - 7 win in the final, with tries from Nick Anderton & Dudley Mennie eventually proving the difference on an energy sapping warm autumn day.
Wattisham captain, Joe Jitoko, was delighted with his team's performance:
"It is our first time here so we're delighted. We have a number of players from the army which has really helped our fitness and I think that was key at the end because the final was the hardest game we've had."
Jitoko praised the efforts of all the teams before paying tribute to his own team: "The whole tournament is brilliant and very well-organised. We take our hats off to the other team but I'm really pleased with how we played and I want to thank them for all the effort and hard-work they put in."
By winning the fifth Heineken 10s festival, Wattisham Warriors automatically go into the hat alongside previous victors to become eligible for the Heineken legacy donation, which will be awarded to one of the victorious clubs at the completion of the competition.
In the plate final, Colchester RFC ran out confident winners, running in a handful of tries to defeat Shelford by 42 - 7.
Colchester captain, Chris Mills, was ecstatic with his team's efforts: "The game went really well, our defence was solid and the attack was even better, cutting good lines which left Shelford on the back foot for most of the game. We thoroughly enjoyed the tournament, it's been a great event and we look forward to coming back next year. It's a great start to the season and definitely helped us for the rest of the season, especially with fitness and team work."
Meanwhile, Cambourne ended their day on a high by defeating Wendens Ambo by 31 - 7 in the shield final and their captain Dan Sundler was pleased to end the day with a win:
"We played a good game and it's nice to win one eventually. It was a very good tournament as a whole but we're glad to get a good win on the board at the end of the day."
Andrew Sarek, Community Rugby Committee Chairman & tournament organiser, added: "It's been a fantastic day, well-organised and very enjoyable for all teams. Our thanks to Heineken for organising a great day for all the teams, it's been fantastic."
The Heineken 10s, which take place at 15 separate clubs this autumn, will act as the perfect prelude to another exciting season of European competition. The tournaments are the first ever national club 10s tournament in England and will see over 3000 amateur players getting involved.
