The opening round of the Heineken Cup last weekend was a true example of how unpredictable this competition is and proves to us, if needed, why we tune in week in week out. The first pool stage games were a fascinating mix of attrition, tries, dogged defence and breath-taking attack and results that many didn't expect.
Results such as defending champions and mighty Heineken Cup specialists Munster almost beaten at the renovated Thomond Park by French newcomers Montauban and Sale taking a bonus point win away at Clermont Auvergne show that there is so much to enjoy from this competition. Nothing can be taken for granted and it just demonstrates what a tough competition the Heineken Cup is to win.
Coming so quickly of the back of the first weekend of action, the second set of pool matches will be equally intriguing and no less crucial for those with designs on qualification. Tired limbs and aching bodies will need to be once again readied for the fight and another 80 minutes or so of almost test match level rugby.
Teams that kicked off with a win last week will be looking to consolidate their victories and take another step towards the last eight. Sale's win away in France, for example, will mean nothing if they are then turned over at home by Munster and likewise Harlequins will need to build on their terrific fight back against the Scarlets with a victory in more familiar surroundings at home to Ulster. Such is the level of Heineken Cup rugby that sides will want to build on the momentum of last week's victory and keep the confidence flowing and spirits in the camp high.
