The Borders' dream of reaching the quarter-finals of the PARKER PEN CHALLENGE CUP were dashed as Montauban matched their slender win on home soil the previous wekeend with another close call at Hughenden.
Having lost by three points in France, the Scottish newcomers were beaten by six points on their own patch to lose 31-22 on aggregate.
While Montauban move on to the quarter-finals to play the winners of the game between Bath and Bridgend, the European campaign is now over for the season for the Borders .
The visitors took an immediate lead after only two minutes when Benoit Albert kicked a penalty, but Kevin Utterson was quick to respond for the home side. By half-time, Montauban had increased their advanatge to 9-6 thanks to a second penalty from Albert and another from Sebastien Fauque.
Tanner Villi added an injury time penalty for the Borders to cut the deficit and it was nip and tuck throughout a very close and tense second half.
The only other points the 2,100 crowd were able to witness was a 72nd minute drop goal from Pierre Broncan that finally put the game beyond the reach of the home side.
