Newcastle Falcons have strengthened their squad with two new signings.
South African Mark Andrews signed for the Falcons on Wednesday, but will not join the squad until the middle of January, 2003.
Andrews has signed a contract that will see him stay at the club until the end of June, 2004.
The 30-year-old lock is the most capped Springbok of all time with 77 Tests, making his debut on the 1993 tour of Argentina.
During his time at Natal he appeared in the Currie Cup wining sides of 1995 and 1996, as well as helping the Sharks reach the Vodacom Super 12 semi-finals in 1996, 1997 and 1998, and the final against the Brumbies in 2001.
Falcons Director of Rugby, Rob Andrew said: "Mark Andrews could turn out to be one of our best signings.
"He has the experience, is not too old and most importantly wants to make a name for himself in Europe like he has in South Africa and the whole of the southern hemisphere.
"He's a genuine leader and was a regular captain of Natal, who he played for during the last 11 years. Mark is very loyal and in fact we will be only his second senior club."
On Thursday evening James Christian became the second player in a week to join the Falcons.
The 24-year-old joins the club following a successful career with Auckland Blues and Auckland NPC. Christian has represented New Zealand Universities, New Zealand under-21 and New Zealand Academy.
Andrew's initial interest in Christian was fuelled after a discussion with former Falcons hooker Ross Nesdale, who had nothing but praise for the young star.
"I met up with Ross before the England v New Zealand match and took the opportunity to ask his opinion," said Andrew.
"We need someone covering that area. James is young, has plenty of playing experience and will be an asset to the club."
James will join the Falcons with immediate effect and is contracted until the end of the season.
