Heineken Cup newcomers Sale Sharks have been dealt a hammer blow with the news that their English international fly-half Charles Hodgson is to undergo a knee operation that will keep him out of action for at least a month.
Hodgson sustained the injury against London Irish on October 5.
'I damaged the knee when I was tackled by Justin Bishop, just before Steve Hanley scored a try against London Irish. I got up and took the conversion, but I think that I was simply running on adrenaline.'
Despite treatment, the injury has not responded and has been forced to see a specialist to determine the extent of the injury.
As a result of medical advice it was decided that an operation would take place next weekend (November 2).
The enforced absence of Hodgson is a major setback for the PARKER PEN SHIELD holders, who have made a poor start to their debut Heineken Cup campaign, a 18-24 defeat in Round 1 at home to Bourgoin was followed by a 26-14 defeat at Glasgow Rugby in Round 2.
Hodgson will be desperate to return to fitness in time for Sale's make-or-break Heineken Cup Round 3 battle against Llanelli at Heywood Road on December 6.
Hodgson said. 'If all goes according to plan, I should be back in training quite soon.
'Hopefully I will be back in time for our two Heineken Cup games against Llanelli in December.'
