A random test taken on Dinamo Bucuresti player Mihai Ravariu after a PARKER PEN CHALLENGE CUP Round 1 match between Dinamo Bucuresti and Saracens on 12 October 2002 subsequently tested positive for human chorionic gonadotrophin - a testosterone stimulant - which is a prohibited substance on the IOC List of Prohibited Substances.
On 22 November 2002 ERC's Anti-Doping Officer, Roger O'Connor, formally charged Mr Ravariu with a doping offence under the terms of the ERC Anti-Doping Programme 2002/03. In accordance with the terms of the Programme, Mr Ravariu was immediately provisionally suspended from playing rugby union pending a full hearing of the charge.
At a hearing held on Monday, 3 March 2003, an Anti-Doping Tribunal (Professor Lorne Crerar, chair, Dr Barry O'Driscoll and Brian McLoughlin) convened under the auspices of the ERC Anti-Doping Programme 2002/03 upheld the charge, and as a sanction suspended Mr Ravariu from participation in the sport of rugby union for two years, from 3 March 2003 to 2 March 2005.
Mr Ravariu has been advised of his right to appeal against that decision, in accordance with the terms of the Programme.
