Excitement for the forthcoming Leinster Lions v Biarritz Heineken Cup quarter-final is reaching fever pitch, with Leinster Lions reporting that they are set to break the record for the largest ever Heineken Cup quarter-final crowd - currently standing at 37,000 when Toulouse beat Montferrand 31-18 in 1999.
'We will surpass the previous Heineken Cup Quarter-final attendance and exceed 40,000 spectators. This is a great tribute to both Leinster and Irish rugby. said Leinster Chief Executive Mick Dawson.
Only last week tickets went on sale for the West Upper Stand, and now Leinster have now opened the North Terrace of Lansdowne Road to the public as the huge demand for tickets continues.
"This set to be our biggest ever attendance. We were involved in the Celtic League final v Munster in 2001, there were 30,000 at Lansdowne Road, but this is set to surpass even that," media manager Tom McCormack said last week.
"The total capacity of Lansdowne Road is almost 48,900 and our aim is to really make the quarter-final a special event. Coach Matt Williams and all of the team expect a ' sea of blue' and we can report a big demand for Leinster replicas," said Dawson.
Biarritz's Lansdowne Road loser Serge Betsen said after France's recent defeat to Ireland.
"The Irish crowd were incredible again - they are 200% behind their team, encouraging them to make that extra effort and go that extra yard. They are so respectful of the opposition team too, there is always complete silence whenever kicks are being taken, whoever is taking them, that really sets a good example.
"There will be a desire to get revenge over the Irish in Dublin on April 12 but at the end of the day, this is about our club and it's a very important rendez-vous."
Tickets are still available through the Leinster website www.leinsterrugby.ie
