Press Statement From Erc: Dublin Final Update

PRESS STATEMENT FROM ERC

Following questions from the French media regarding the venue of the 2003 Heineken Cup final between Perpignan and Toulouse, ERC today (Tuesday, 29 April) confirm that the final will be played as scheduled at Lansdowne Road, Dublin, on 24 May, 2003 (kick-off 3.00 pm local time).

ERC last autumn announced that Dublin would be the venue for the 2003 final, the second successive occasion the Heineken Cup final venue had been announced in advance of the tournament. That was, and continues to be, a strategic ambition supported by all stakeholder nations.

The prime reasoning behind the on-going ERC policy of selecting and announcing the venue for the final before the start of the tournament is to build a major European sporting event, allowing ERC and their tournament and broadcasting partners the necessary time to create the stage all concerned believe the final deserves.

The huge contribution the Irish teams have made to the tournament, and the firm belief that Ireland had the local support base should there be no Irish participation in the final, contributed to Dublin being unanimously supported by all competing nations for the 2003 final, total support that remains intact.

The first tranche of tickets went on sale in January and the 6,000 tickets on offer were sold in less than two hours. Around 1,200 hospitality packages were also sold before the semi-finals and there is on-going interest in the packages.

Title sponsors Heineken and all the tournament partners remain fully supportive of the Dublin final and both finalists were fully aware before the tournament started that Dublin was the venue for this major European event.

ERC will hold a Press Conference at 1.00 pm at Lansdowne Road on
Thursday, 1 May, at which the marketing and ticketing strategies, and
further details of the 2003 final, will be announced.

Suite aux questions de la part des médias franà§ais concernant la finale de la Heineken Cup 2002/2003 opposant Perpignan à Toulouse, ERC confirme aujourd'hui (mardi 29 avril 2003) que la finale aura lieu comme prévu à Lansdowne Road, Dublin, le 24 mai 2003, coup d'envoi à 15h00 heure locale.

ERC avait annoncé à l'automne dernier que la finale 2003 aurait lieu à Dublin. Pour la deuxià¨me fois consécutive, le lieu de la finale de la Heineken Cup avait été annoncé avant le début du tournoi. Cela était, et est toujours, une stratégie ambitieuse, que soutiennent toutes les nations actionnaires.

La principale raison pour ERC de choisir et d'annoncer le lieu de la finale avant le début du tournoi est de construire un événement sportif européen majeur. Cela donne à ERC et à leurs partenaires commerciaux et télévisuels le temps nécessaire à la préparation d'un événement que toutes les personnes concernées veulent digne d'une telle compétition.

L'énorme apport du rugby irlandais au tournoi, ainsi que la ferme conviction que l'Irlande posséde le support local nécessaire màªme sans participation irlandaise en finale, ont contribué à choisir Dublin à l'unanimité pour la finale 2003, un choix qu'ont soutenu toutes les nations participantes.

Ce support inconditionnel reste aujourd'hui intact.

La premià¨re tranche de tickets a été mise en vente au mois de janvier et les 6000 billets ont été vendus en moins de deux heures. Environ 1200 hospitality packages ont été vendus avant les demi-finales et continuent à susciter de l'intéràªt.

Le sponsor en titre Heineken et tous les partenaires du tournoi soutiennent toujours la finale à Dublin. Les deux équipes finalistes étaient pleinement conscientes, avant màªme le début du tournoi, que Dublin serait le lieu de cet événement européen majeur.

ERC tiendra une conférence de presse Jeudi 1 mai à 13h00 à Lansdowne Road au cours de laquelle seront annoncées les stratégies de marketing et de billetterie ainsi que les détails complémentaires de la finale 2003.
