England's World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson could be forced to sit-out Newcastle Falcons' back-to-back Parker Pen Challenge Cup second round matches with Montferrand after suffering further shoulder damage.
Falcons director of rugby Rob Andrew will await the verdict from another examination of his outside halves injured shoulder this week before deciding when he can return to action.
Wilkinson lasted just over 50 minutes of his first game since winning the World Cup for England in Australia with his last gasp drop goal when the Falcons beat Northampton Saints last weekend.
"The focus has gone from winning the World Cup to this infatuation with an injury, which is clearly there but will hopefully settle down," said Andrew.
"Jonny just wants to get back to playing. He's pretty frustrated and disappointed, but it goes with the territory - it's a very tough physical sport.
With all the adulation that he's received, he just wishes the injury wasn't there so he could actually get on with playing."
The Falcons will have home advantage over Montferrand in the first leg of their second round assignment on Sunday, 11 January. They travel to play in France the following Sunday for a fixture that will pit Wilkinson against his arch-French rival Olivier Magne.
