Montauban have set their sights on opening their centenary celebrations by taking the scalp of 1998 Heineken Cup champions Bath Rugby in the first leg of their PARKER PEN CHALLENGE CUP quarter-final on Saturday evening.
Sergei Sergueev, the towering Russian international lock and Montauban captain, has become one of Montauban's favourite sons after playing for the club for the last 12 seasons and hopes to help make their 100th year one to remember.
"This is our centenary year and this quarter-final against Bath will be a huge match to kick-off the celebrations," he said. "It will be our first official competitive match of the new year, though we did play a friendly against Toulouse last Friday.
"This will be a huge occasion for Montauban. It is the first time we have reached a European quarter-final and we are not going to let the opportunity pass us by. We will put everything into the match with the hope of sneaking through - and why not hope to go all the way?
"We will have to produce a perfect match committing as few errors as possible and scoring at the least opportunity but we know we are capable of producing good matches and we are confident in our abilities.
"The Sapiac atmosphere is something special. Ever since we went into the top flight last season we have had superb crowds and we have had some notable wins at home. But I don't think a team like Bath will be fazed by those factors - they are well experienced and they will stick to their game.
"I have been at Montauban for 12 seasons, playing over 250 games for the club. So on a personal note too it is great to have this opportunity. It is not every weekend that you get to play against one of the best sides in England and former Heineken Cup champions.
