London Wasps received a boost today when England fullback Josh Lewsey reported fit to play against Leicester in the final Zurich Premiership match of the season at Wycombe on Saturday.
Lewsey is a key player for Warren Gatland's side, and his return to fitness gives Wasps backline added potency as they build up to the biggest match in the clubs history - their date with Toulouse at Twickenham in the Heineken Cup Final on May 23.
Lewsey injured his groin in the 37-32 semi-final win over Munster, and missed the 28-25 defeat by Gloucester on Saturday. However, he has infromed Warren Gatland, the Wasps director of rugby, that the injury has healed sufficiently for him to face Leicester in a game the club must win to have any chance of finishing top.
If Bath, one point ahead of Wasps, lose at home to Gloucester and Gatland's men dispose of inform Leicester, then Wasps will go directly into the Premiership playoff final at Twickenham on 29 May, avoiding a play-off against Northampton or Gloucester, a week after their date with Toulouse.
The news is timely for the Parker Pen Challenge Cup holders and Zurich champions following the withdrawn of Craig Dowd from the Heineken Cup final squad.
The loose head prop, capped 60 times for the All Blacks picked up an achilles injury during his side's 28-25 Zurich Premiership defeat against Gloucester at Kingsholm.
The injury is likely to keep him out for at least a month - ruling him out of Wasps' bid for an English and European double.
