The entire London Wasps' squad returned to training on Tuesday and were quickly put through their paces by the fitness team. The players, looking well-rested, started the first day of what will be another long season.
However, the afternoon session was cut short as a thunderstorm interrupted training and flooded the pitches and administration offices (The Heineken Cup and Zurich Premiership Trophy were the first objects to be saved).
Commentating on the return to training, Warren Gatland said, "This is the start of hopefully another great season. The players are looking rested and refreshed and eager to get back to business. The first day back is never easy for any player, but you have got to start somewhere. After the pre-season Poland trip the players had the week off, which was very successful, but today was the start for the entire squad.
"We are leaving for Biarritz on Thursday and we are taking a strong side. The only England players who won't make the trip will be Lawrence Dallaglio, Josh Lewsey, Simon Shaw and Fraser Waters as I've decided to give them the weekend off. Stuart Abbott (Shoulder), Craig Dowd (Achilles) Rob Howley (Hand), Jonny O'Connor (Achilles) Tom Rees (Knee) and Ed Thrower (Groin) are injured and won't be available.
"We know Biarritz are a strong side and we are expecting a tough game. It's the perfect pre-season encounter to get us up and running.
"I'm also pleased to confirm that we have completed the signings of James Brooks (Flyhalf, Northampton Saints) and Rob Hoadley (Centre, London Irish)."
