Thomas Lievremont captains Biarritz Olympique at Rugby Calvisano in Round 4 on Saturday calling for his side to remind defending Heineken Cup champions London Wasps and Leicester Tigers that the chase for Pool 1 honours is very much a three-horse race and far from a strictly English affair.
Wasps top the group with 10 points with Biarritz Olympique and the Tigers breathing down their necks with nine points and nine tries apiece. The French club edge the 2001 and 2002 winners out of second spot on points difference.
"The Pool we are in is going to be very tight and it was crucial to get a big score at home to Calvisano in order to be in a strong position for qualification," he said.
"We have two big games after Christmas and a good score at home against Calvisano would have taken off some of the pressure and made a good foundation for both the return leg and the following final two rounds.
"We are now under a lot off pressure to win by a large margin in Italy on Saturday. We tend to play far better at home than in away matches so we have made things very difficult for ourselves.
"I was disappointed with our game on Saturday. We had a very strong first half but the scoring rate dropped off in the second 40 minutes.
"I think there were a few refereeing decisions which went against us but we still under performed. We need to take the positive aspects from the game forward and look at our weak areas in preparation for the return leg."
