Wales outside half Stephen Jones put the boot into his fellow countryman Lynn Howells in the first leg of Round 1 of the European Challenge Cup in Leonessa last Saturday to help Clermont Auvergne take a healthy 65 points advantage into the second leg at Parc des Sports Marcel-Michelin on Saturday.
Jones, who left Llanelli Scarlets for Clermont Auvergne in the summer, contributed 20 points with the boot in the first leg as his new club put down a marker as one of the tournament favourites.
"We will not be looking at the 65 points advantage we have but concentrating on our own performance on the day," said Jones, who scored 550 points in 48 Heineken Cup appearances for the Scarlets.
"What is important to us is that we keep improving on some key areas that we have been working on.
"We are slowly improving after a poor start to the season. Our recent win over Toulouse might look like having been the turning point but in the three matches before that we threw away three victories that we should have clinched - against Stade Francais Paris, Bourgoin and Narbonne.
"We have worked hard to get it right and now the confidence is coming with the performances.
"Clermot Auvergne have got a strong squad with some extremely talented players and when our internationals returned things picked up dramatically.
"It was good to see Lynn again and as far as I could see he is doing a very good job at Leonessa.
"They could easily have scored a couple of tries in the first leg and, although we ended up by zeroing them, I am sure Lynn will be looking for them to be more clinical in their finishing in the second leg on Saturday.
"On a personal front I am absolutely loving it out here."
