Heineken Cup and Zurich Premiership holders London Wasps have confirmed that England scrumhalf Matt Dawson will be joining the club next season. Dawson joins the club from the Northampton Saints and has signed a one-year contract.
Dawson's signing is seen as cover for former British and Irish Lion No. 9 Rob Howley. The former Welsh scrumhalf, who famously beat Clement Poitrenaud the bounce of the ball in the last minute of this season's Heineken Cup final, will be out until October following an operation on his right wrist to correct cracked piece of bone.
Wasps' Chairman, Chris Wright said, "I am disappointed that we are to lose the services of Rob Howley for at least four months. I'm pleased to be able to confirm that we have signed Matt Dawson. Matt is an outstanding player and will be a real asset to the club".
Dawson, who is currently on tour with England down-under, will join up with Warren Gatland's team in mid July for pre-season training.
Howley said, "It's unfortunate that I need this operation but it's something that has to be done. Having my old British Lion sparring partner at the club will be fantastic and I'm looking forward to the challenge of competing against him and the other scrumhalves we have. I will have the operation this week and I will be out of action for the next four months".
