Scarlets aiming to peak in Europe

The West Wales region have struggled domestically so far this term but are now in command of Pool 6 of the continent's premier club competition thanks to two wins from their opening two matches.

And Davies had no qualms in making it clear that his side's priorities lie in Europe this season as the Scarlets look to build on a proud history of Heineken Cup achievement.

"Results haven't gone our way in the Magners League but I haven't been frustrated with our performances," said Davies, after his side followed up a 24-12 win over Brive with an even more commanding performance at the Madejski Satdium.

"We were always targeting to peak in Europe, in terms of our rugby, our conditioning and in terms of getting our strongest team available to us out on the park. Probably the first time we played the strongest team available to us was last week against Brive.

"We've been nowhere in Europe for the last couple of years. One of the things I'm trying to do is make the group realise that we have a very important heritage and that's fundamental to who we are.

"But we are the future group and we have to move forward safe in the knowledge that we have a strong heritage that we do have to uphold but that we have to do that our own way."

And the Scarlets certainly went some way to achieving that goal on Saturday afternoon as they produced a hugely-committed display to topple one of the tournament's most-talked about sides.

"I thought we were superb. It was a huge challenge for us and we stepped up to it," added Davies.

"It was probably one of our best performances in Europe against a really quality team. One of the things that European competition does is that it forces you to look at your opposition and I can categorically say that London Irish are one of the best teams that I've looked at in terms of their overall game.

"We came to do a job, we were focussed on what we had to do and we came away with a result. I always thought that this was in us."
