Easterby backs young Scarlets to succeed

The Scarlets, who reached the semi-finals in 2000, 2002 and 2007, have only won one of their 13 matches in Europe's premier competition.

But Irish flanker and coach Easterby believes the Welsh region's new generation must get off to a flyer against Brive at Parc y Scarlets on Saturday.

Easterby, 34, said: "We haven't gone out and bought big-name signings and we're trying to develop the youth from within.

"There were a lot of local boys who played at the end of last season and gained first-team experience in the Magners League and at European level.

"Then Jon Davies and Dan Evans gained their first caps on Wales' summer tour and did really well.

"We've exposed players that normally we wouldn't have seen and they have come in setting good standards.

"The young players came to the fore at the end of the season and we hope that will pay dividends and kick-start our European season this year."

The Scarlets began the campaign with a morale-boosting home win over reigning 'Kings of Europe' Leinster but have suffered four straight defeats since.

And despite brave performances failing to reward points in the domestic league, Easterby is confident that coach Nigel Davies can turn their fortunes around.

Easterby added: "It will be a challenge but we need to be more consistent. We've a tough group in Europe but it's one we can be competitive in. Leinster will be favourites being Heineken Cup champions last season but we can beat anyone on the day.

"We've Stephen Jones and Matthew Rees are back and it's great that they will bring back positive experiences from the British Lions tour.

"I've spoken to both of them and they really enjoyed the tour. We hope it will be good for us and we can learn from them.

"Both of them were outstanding on the Lions tour. We all know about Stephen's ability but Matthew has proved himself to be the best hooker in the UK.

"He missed out on the first test selection with the Lions but came on and cemented his place as the starting hooker. Matthew took his opportunity and that is what the Lions is all about. It's a short period but he did that.

"Of course, there is a responsibility which comes with being the best but I'm sure he will grow in stature in the future and be on top of his game."
