Northampton Saints still have the chance of silverware this season as they have booked their place in the final of the European Challenge Cup thanks to a crucial late drop goal from Steve Myler.
Myler kept a cool head under pressure as Northampton overcame a second half fightback from Saracens to close out the match 16-13.
It was a see-saw battle that saw Saracens claw their way back from a half time deficit to snatch victory in the final minutes.
Saints were in command of the fist period, but despite dominating proceedings they were only able to breach the whitewash once.
Their try came from captain Bruce Reihana after 35 minutes, the skipper rounding off a swift move with a fine score.
And that try was the difference between the sides with ten minutes to play. Both goal kickers had notched two scores, making the seven point lead for the home side far from safe with less than ten minutes to play.
Saracens were much the better team in the second period and got the score they deserved when Rodd Penney cut through with seven minutes reminaing.
The score was converted by the ever stable Glen Jackson and for a minute, extra time beckoned.
But Saints marched forward, controlling the ball, and positioned themselves for the drop goal. Myler delivered and that was the telling score.
