The Peelers RFC stormed to victory at the second Heineken 10's rugby festival held at Clifton RFC on the Monday 4 May as the Bristol club made the most of a last minute entry in to the competition to claim the honours over University of Bristol RFC.
In the plate competition, Hornets RFC made it a good day by claiming the honours, with a comprehensive victory over Chepstow RFC 35-24. Paul Morrissey, captain of the Hornets, said: "It was a great day; I am already looking forward to next year. The organisation of the day was fantastic - the perfect way to spend a bank holiday."
Craig McGrath, Peeler's Captain, said: "It was a fantastic festival- this was the first time the Peelers RFC have entered the competition and the day has really helped with raising funds for the Neath RFC trust. Bristol University were worthy finalists and a great opposition."
Mike Shore, President of the Bristol combination, presented the trophies to both sides. Mike said: "Bristol Combination are very pleased to host the tournament in conjunction with Clifton RFC. A particular thanks to Heineken for their support of rugby in the Bristol area."
By winning the first Heineken 10's festival, the Peelers RFC automatically go into the hat to become eligible for the Heineken legacy donation, which will be awarded to one of the victorious clubs at the completion of all of the Heineken 10's festivals in 2009.
Following a successful inaugural year of the first ever national 10's rugby competition in 2008, the Heineken 10's returns bigger and better in 2009. With 15 tournaments hosted at rugby clubs nationwide between May and September, this is the first ever social rugby tens tournament of its kind. It promises to attract even more amateur rugby players - with over 2500 taking part in 2009.
